This allows the thinking in progress in the organization to take place openly, and creates a visible go-to place for each topic, where people can learn, contribute, and build on each other’s ideas. Tags and search allow work to be discovered and like topics to be grouped. Views showing “what’s new” and change alerts notify of the latest updates. The ability to put a watch on a particular page ensures you are alerted to items that are most important to you.

Working transparently, you see who is working on what with whom. You learn about conversations underway that you may want to participate in, where you could add value or leverage in some way. Throughout the Socialtext wiki, you can always see who authored what, so at any time you can pivot to the people behind the content.

You can “follow” these people and get an update stream of their activity. These automatic “breadcrumbs” keep you apprised of the topics and pages they take part in. A visit to their profile will show you who they follow, and what workspaces you share in common. This process of social discovery creates a more connected, engaged and empowered organization.

Build social networks

Discover and create social networks for employees, partners and customers. In Socialtext People, each person has a profile that can be tagged both by the profile owner and by others in the organization. A tag cloud shows you all the profile tags in the organization and a tag search uncovers like groups of people. You can use tags to discover and create ad-hoc groups based on any attribute, such as location, shared interest, project, expertise, function, or other. Often ad-hoc groups begin conversations that turn into significant value for the company.

Tap your social network to get things done

With Socialtext, you can leverage the knowledge and thinking of the people who are important to you, the people whose conversations and activities are on your radar. Since people can see each other’s work, you can leverage and re-purpose what has already been done. For projects that could benefit from specialized knowledge, you can discover and reach out to ad-hoc groups of like individuals for ideas and insight. Often there is someone with just the specialized knowledge you need, sometimes right down the hall. With Socialtext, you can uncover any specialized talent or experience that may exist in the company, in a few clicks.

Make your corporate directory social

Information from Active Directory or an LDAP directory can be automatically populated into Socialtext People. Profiles on Socialtext People are richly contextual, showing not only the standard corporate data such as reporting structure and contact information, but also information about the person such as the people they are following, the workspaces they have in common with you, their profile page on external social networks, their recent activity and more.
